Editable Mesh Tools

Editable mesh tools (listed in Table 4.3) are the polygon-editing tools found either through the shortcut menu (displayed in Figure 4.7) or the sub-object level of an object that has been collapsed to an editable mesh.

Table 4.3: THE EDITABLE MESH TOOLS AND FUNCTIONS
Sub-Object Level

Mesh Tool Vertex Edge Face Polygon Function

Attach/Detach ü ü Adds faces to/separates faces from object

Extrude ü ü ü Creates new geometry from selected sub-object

Chamfer/Bevel ü ü ü ü Rounds over selected sub-object—very useful.

Create ü ü ü ü Creates the desired element; also creates new shapes from multiple selected edges.

Cut ü ü ü Allows you to arbitrarily cut new edges, faces, and polygons by merely “drawing” new edges—incredibly powerful.

Divide ü ü ü Allows you to choose the location of a new vertex (and subsequent faces and edges) by clicking along an edge

Weld/Break ü Combines/separates vertices

Edges ü Provides edge visibility and direction control

Normals ü Controls surface direction of faces

Align Selected ü ü ü ü Changes the orientation of selection

Make Selected Planar ü ü ü ü Aligns selected sub-object to common plane
